# Engage, Query Builder

A redesign of the Query Builder — simpler for newcomers, with full manual control retained for experts, and AI-powered prompt input layered on top.

## Overview

The Query Builder is a vital component of the Engage platform, enabling users to construct and refine queries efficiently. The goal was to redesign the UI and UX to provide a more intuitive, structured, and powerful experience while integrating new AI-powered capabilities — simplifying for less technical users while retaining full control for experts.

## Role

I led the design of the Query Builder redesign, translating product requirements into actionable UX and UI solutions. I iterated on design concepts, user flows, and AI integration, continuously refining through feedback and testing.

## Research

We identified key UX challenges around familiarity, transition friction, metric prominence, accessibility, and the dual needs of beginners vs. experts, then mapped each to a thoughtful solution before iterating.

## Challenge

- Users were accustomed to a specific workflow — we needed to simplify the UX while keeping familiar elements.
- The old query-building process was inefficient but ingrained; transition couldn't overwhelm existing users.
- Query metrics are the most important aspect of the tool — the redesign had to minimize UI distractions.
- The interface needed to be intuitive and usable for a diverse range of users, including those with disabilities.
- Existing logic was complex for beginners but essential for experts, requiring a dual approach.
- AI-powered suggestions had to feel seamless and helpful rather than intrusive, guiding without taking control away.

## Solution

- Replaced the tab system with a structured, component-driven interface that keeps the same logic but feels more natural.
- Introduced AI-powered prompt input that translates plain-language descriptions into structured queries automatically.
- Kept query metrics clearly visible — the redesign supports the builder without overshadowing the insights.
- Added a dedicated Search button and accessibility patterns for keyboard navigation and screen readers.
- Preserved expert mode for manual query entry — beginners get a streamlined flow, experts retain full control.
- Layered AI-driven recommendations on top of completed queries to help users refine and optimize results.

## In closing

The redesigned Query Builder brings a new level of usability, intelligence, and efficiency to Engage. A reorganized, component-driven UI replaces the tab-based layout. AI-powered prompt input reduces complexity for newcomers. Expert users retain full manual control. The balanced layout keeps query metrics in focus, and AI-driven optimization helps users refine queries dynamically.
